#43 complete - Geocaching

I was looking for something fun to do on the last day of Spring Break, that was not too time/labor intensive and was inexpensive or FREE....looking over my 101 in 1001 days list I realized that the boys and I could check out geocaching!

What is Geocaching?  Here is the entry from Wikipedia "Geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (tupperware or similar) or ammo boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek," sharing many aspects with benchmarkingtrigpointingorienteeringtreasure-huntingletterboxing, and waymarking."

There is also a cute short video explaining it at http://www.geocaching.com/We used the iphone app to geocache with for the first time.  There is a free and a 9.99 version.  I paid for the app so I cannot speak for the free version.  We used the compass function and the map function.  When we got down to the site the topographical map and the satellite map were very helpful!

I knew that this cache had treasure to trade, so we brought Jibbitz for Crocs to leave and the boys each picked out two treasures.  I highly recommend caching with kids, they loved the hunt and did not complain about the walk at all and we went almost 2 miles there and 2 miles back!

#27 post to blog for thirty days, DONE!

I chose to focus on blogging everyday for a period to get myself in the habit and to see where it took me...did I enjoy exploring various topics or staying to just one or two, did I find it a productive creative outlet, did I build a foundation of followers?

The best thing about this was that I did find that I had material to write about.  I tried to vary it up between what I want to share with others as far as advice, posts that were purley humor or creative outlets, etc.  I did find that it helped to have various posts in draft form.  I could write about something that was on my mind, but I maybe didn't have time to find the right graphic or links.  Drafts in progress helped me to be ready to post something daily even when I was busy.

Since I completed the goal I have continued to post every few days.  Last week was a killer at work and I knew that meant I would not have the energy or time at night to post.

If you have not read my blog: Raising Tomorrow's Men...that is the blog I posted to daily in Dec/Jan.

Progress....where to do I need to focus!

50%  5 out of 10 in Health and Body
35%  7 out of 20 in Mind and Creativity
50%  2 out of 4 in Spirit and Wellbeing
34%  7 out of 21 in Family and Children (but many are ongoing goals)
18%  2 out of 11 in Community and Service
41%  7 out of 17 in Home and Cleaning
34%  3 out of 9 in Finances and Future
14%  1 out of 7 in Love and Marriage

34 out of 99 (two are closing goals) = 34%

Of course some of these are things to do monthly for a year, so they are not concluded yet...but it does point to the Love/marriage, and the Community/Sevice categories.

#22 progress:another new recipe

I was in the mood for CAKE!  So since we've been trying to try new recipes....I found this one!
"Pig Pickin Cake" - I know I have had this before at Southern Pot Luck Dinners, just didn't know that  that was what it was called.  I think I remember it as Dump Cake, no matter the name, it is a light and fluffy treat, with just a little extra sweetness!

I tend to use the fruit with the light syrup to avoid the extra calories and sugar, but it still tastes good.  Some people make it as a layer cake, but I tend to just do 9x13 if a cake is just for family, and for nothing special.

Well this was gooooood!   Again, forgot to take a picture, perhaps tomorrow!
http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/01/pig-cake/

My favorite part of this blog post from Pioneer Woman:

"Next, swipe your index finger along the beater and cover said finger with batter. Lick. Close your eyes. Moan. Then go wash your hands with soap and water. Repeat as necessary. (Note: please don’t do the gluttonous finger-swiping-and-licking thing if you’re older, or pregnant, or are immuno-compromised. It’s a raw egg thing.)"

Now that is my kind of recipe!

P.S. if you have never had pig pickin cake, just google it, thre are a ton of recipes and they are all almost the same....and all good!

#14 Blog Button Done!

It just happened that as I worked on my blog posting for 30 days (goal #27)  I realized that it was a good time to work on the button I needed for my blog.  As I add followers etc. and develop an identity for my blog I had to take the time to create a button.

I followed a great tutorial from Musings of a Housewife and created my button for free at Picnik.com.

Then I realized that I had only done part of what I needed.  I needed a box with html code where other bloggers could pick up my button.  I found another great tutorial, this time from Mommy Bits.  This one seemed confusing, but I followed the steps and it worked!

So check out the new button and the blog side bar with the blog button code box!

#25 - Get Ready, Get Set, WRITE

Ok, I set the goal of writing and submitting a professional article.  I have to admit, that as competitive as I am, I of course will probably keep trying until I succeed!  The avenue I have chosen is the magazine "Educational Leadership."  It is a publication that I respect and the writing style is one that I think would fit mine.  I also attended a workshop several summers ago at the National Board Workshop that was put on by ASCD and it was titled, writing for ASCD.  They gave hits and pointers that in reality are all available on their website, but mostly it gave me the confidence to try!  They do pick several "joe shmos" for each edition, but they also give feedback if your article is close to being selected and may ask you to revise it!

The upcoming topics were just released and it looks like there are at least three that I would be skilled and interested in writing.  There is one on PLCs, one on STEM, and also one on learning from the world - which might tie in with our new Chinese connection and future visit to China.

Oh I got excited too soon...those were topics for ASCD express which is an online newsletter for every two weeks....hmmm but that would be a great place to start and the topics did get me excited!

When looking there are two Ed. Leadership topics that would appeal to me
Coaching related to the school administrator position and one on interventions that work special online edition....but a Feb. 14th deadline!

Well....I will update you soon on what I select, but it looks like it is time to tackle #25!

#8 5k complete!

Yesterday, I completed my first 5K! Yeah!!!!  I didn't do it at break neck speed and I didn't jog or run, but I did it.  Now I know the distance - how it feels.  I was worried I would push too hard and then not be able to maintain the pace or be hurting later.  I was with a friend who needed a little slower pace, so I kept pushing her, but I therefore still was not at my best.  That is ok, it was good times with a friend and now I know that I could go faster, even jog some!

Here's to the next 5k on my way to getting the physical me back!

I don't have a pic yet - it is on a friend's phone, but I post one when I have it!

over 1/2 way there! #27

So far I have posted for 18 days in a row (not counting Christmas Day - we all get that off) as part of my goal to post on my blog for 30 days consecutively.  Why 30 days?  Well for one it would increase readership, but also for an outlet through writing and to create a habit.  If I am used to posting everyday, then I can after the 30 days at least post 2-3 times a week!

I even attempted this through one of busiest times at home and work.  The key is to realize that you can write and pre-schedule the post to be posted. That way if I know I am going to have a busy evening I can post early or if I have ideas I can start working on them a day or two ahead of time!

So if you have never read my other blog: http://raisingtomorrowsmen.blogspot.com/, click over and read a few posts :)
